WELCOME
The staff and governors of
Broomhill Junior School extend a warm welcome to you.
We are proud of the achievements and reputation of Broomhill Junior
School. We have received a number of School Achievement awards and are
accredited with Gold Healthy School status and Activemark Gold in
recognition of the extra curricular and physical education activities we
provide.
The overall level of progress our children make during their four years
with us is above the national average. This reflects the high standards
of teaching and learning across the school.
We work hard to develop supportive and productive relationships with our
children and their parents. We encourage parents to contact the school
at any time if they wish to discuss any aspect of their child's
schooling. It is our firm belief that a successful education is based on
establishing a positive partnership between home and school.

THE ORGANISATION OF
EDUCATION
The Children at Broomhill are taught in a combination of straight year
group classes and mixed year group classes.
Classes 1, 2 and 3 - Mixed Year 3 and 4 pupils
Classes 4 and 5 - Year 4
pupils
Classes 6 and 7 - Year 6
pupils
The children spend the
majority of their time working with their class teacher but may work
with the other year group teachers for English or Maths.
In school we aim to provide a stable, stimulating environment in which
our children will want to learn. Each child's full potential should be
achieved and to ensure this we share the Nottinghamshire Local Authority
aims, which seek to:
• provide high quality education
• ensure all young people have the same opportunity to learn
• encourage everyone to develop and achieve
• promote lifelong learning
• prepare all young people to contribute to society as responsible
citizens
• aim for excellence in everything we do
CURRICULUM CONTENT
A broad based curriculum is taught at Broomhill, the basis being
the National Curriculum core subjects of Mathematics, English and
Science. During their time at Broomhill Junior School all children will
be involved in regular English and Maths lessons. For English and Maths
each year group is split into two groups based on ability. This enables
us to meet children's needs more effectively and ensures that we can
support children with special needs and offer extension activities to
the more able.
We identify children who are gifted and talented in any aspects of the
curriculum or beyond. These children then have opportunities to develop
their learning at an appropriate level which will be provided by
teaching staff or specialist coaches.
Every classroom is fitted with an interactive whiteboard enabling staff
to use high-quality teaching resources. We have a computer suite
equipped with PCs, data projector, laser printer, and each teacher has a
class digital camera. We also have a set of portable laptops for use in
classrooms. This ensures full delivery of our Information Technology
curriculum. Children also have access to the Internet in line with our
policy. Parents and children can access our school website at
www.broomhill-jun.notts.sch.uk
Other subjects such as
History, Geography, Art, Music, Technology, Drama, Personal and Social
Education, Religious Education and French are normally taught through
projects. Stimuli such as class and residential visits are used to
broaden the children's range of experiences. Children will be taught in
a variety of ways, which will include class teaching, group teaching and
teachers working individually with children. They will also receive
specialist sport coaching sessions during the year.

SPORTS PROVISION
Broomhill has achieved ActiveMark Gold in recognition of our PE and
extracurricular provision.
At Broomhill we aim to involve children of all abilities in creative,
competitive and adventurous sports. These annually include dance,
gymnastics, athletics, swimming, outdoor pursuits and competitor games.
Major games such as football, rugby, basketball, cricket, hockey and
rounders are approached through mini versions of the adult games
(increasing in complexity as the children progress through the school).
Swimming is taught at Hucknall swimming pool. Able swimmers have the
opportunity to aim as high as the Gold Swimming Challenge award.
We have received specialist support in coaching football, rugby,
athletics, swimming, gymnastics basketball, cricket and tennis.
Our facilities are used out of school hours for meetings of the local
residents group. We have developed links with the local Leisure Centre
and have received sponsorship from local industries.

ARTS PROVISION
In educating the whole child the arts play a major role,
developing imagination, creativity and aesthetic awareness.
Experiences are extended through extra curricular activities and
visitors to the school include theatre groups, authors and bands. We
have links with the local comprehensive school and have used them to
support our work.
Individual music lessons are available through school.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES
Football, basketball and lunchtime clubs run for most of the school
year. Other clubs offered include computers, dance, athletics, tag
rugby, rounders, hockey and board games.
We try to ensure that all children have the opportunity to go on a
residential trip with us during their time at school. Educational visits
to the Hathersage Field Study Centre are organised for Years 5 and 6 and
visits to Kingswood Activity Centre are offered to Years 4 and 5.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
For our pupils to make the most of their education at Broomhill,
we believe it is vital for parents to be closely involved.
We give regular homework. The
amount increases as children move through the school. Children take home
a leaflet explaining the type and amount of homework they need to
complete. They also take home target sheets for English and Maths which
helps parents and their children to know exactly what is needed to make
good progress. Each child will also have a reading diary, which contains
tips for parents when reading with children. It also gives a regular
opportunity for parents to communicate with their child's class teacher.
Parents are warmly welcomed in school and any help parents can offer
either in school by working with the class teacher, or at home with
their own child, is very much appreciated.
It is only by home and school working together that real success can be
achieved.
Regular ways in which parents
can be involved in school life are:
• supporting children with their homework and reading
• attending our weekly achievement service
• coming to parents' evenings
• helping with activities in school
• supporting fund raising events
• sharing in our Harvest, Christmas, Book Fair and Sports Day activities
We do appreciate that many of our parents work but we hope that the
variety of activities offered gives everyone a chance to be involved in
as many aspects of their child's school life as possible.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE
The children and staff at Broomhill have worked together to draw up a
set of simple rules to make sure that Broomhill School is happy, safe
and successful.
OUR SCHOOL RULES
• at Broomhill we care about each others feelings and respect other
people's property
• at Broomhill we work with each other to keep our school happy and tidy
• at Broomhill we try to do our best work
• at Broomhill we are polite
• at Broomhill we walk around school so that we are safe
We see the need to build up good relationships between teachers and
children, and children with other children, based on mutual trust and
respect. Teachers organise their day-to-day teaching methods and
curriculum content with this in mind, aiming at a high level of
motivation and involvement. Ultimately the sense of satisfaction gained
by the child proves to be a positive contribution to good behaviour.
If minor disciplinary matters arise they will be dealt with by the
child's class teacher, but major breaches of discipline may be dealt
with by the Head Teacher or Deputy Head in line with our school Code of
Conduct. Our aim, however, is to adopt a preventive policy wherever
possible. Our parents have a significant role to play here and, through
encouraging them to take an active part in school life, we pave the way
for good relationships and support if any disciplinary problems arise
with their children. Both parents and teachers see the need for
acceptable standards of behaviour and we promote this in all aspects of
school life.
THE CARE OF PUPILS
The welfare of children is as important to us as their other educational
needs. Personal problems, difficulties and anxieties are usually best
dealt with by the child's class teacher, who will involve the Head
Teacher and parents where necessary. Our Learning Mentor will work on a
one to one basis with children who are experiencing problems. Everything
you tell us will be in the strictest confidence.

Bullying within school
will not be tolerated. Our Anti-Bullying policy is as follows:
Its aim is to ensure that pupils learn in a supportive, caring and safe
environment without fear of being bullied. Bullying is anti-social
behaviour and affects everyone; it is unacceptable and will not be
tolerated. Only when all issues of bullying are addressed will pupils be
able to benefit from the opportunities available at school.
Bullying is defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a
period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend
themselves. The three main types of bullying are:
• physical (hitting, kicking, theft)
• verbal (name calling,
racist remarks)
• indirect (spreading rumours, excluding someone from social groups)
Pupils who are being bullied may show changes in behaviour, such as
becoming shy and nervous, feigning illness, taking unusual absences or
clinging to adults. There may be evidence of changes in work patterns, a
lack of concentration or truanting from school. Pupils must be
encouraged to report bullying in schools.
The school's teaching and
ancillary staff must be alert to the signs of bullying and act promptly
and firmly against it in accordance with school policy.
Implementation
The following steps may be taken when dealing with incidents:
• If bullying is suspected or reported, the incident will be dealt with
immediately by the member of staff who has been approached.
• a clear account of the incident will be recorded and given to the head
teacher
• the head teacher will interview all concerned and will record the
incident
• class teachers, support staff and midday supervisors will be kept
informed
• parents will be kept informed
• punitive measures will be used as appropriate and in consultation will
all parties concerned
Pupils
Pupils who have been bullied will be supported by:
• being offering an immediate opportunity to discuss the experience with
a member of staff of their choice
• reassurance
• regular contact
• restoration of self-esteem and confidence
Pupils who have bullied will be helped by:
• discussing what happened
• discovering why the pupil became involved
• establishing the wrong doing and need to change
• informing parents or guardians to help change attitudes
The following
disciplinary steps can be taken:
• official warnings to cease offending
• loss of play/lunch times
• exclusion from certain areas of school premises
• minor fixed-term exclusion
• major fixed-term exclusion
• permanent exclusion
Within the curriculum the school will raise the awareness of the nature
of bullying through inclusion in PSHE, assemblies, class councils and
subject areas, as appropriate, in an attempt to eradicate such
behaviour.

SCHOOL DRESS
We take pride in the appearance of our children and appreciate parents'
co-operation in maintaining a practical and tidy standard of dress.
We do have a school uniform. Our school colours are bottle green, gold
and white. School sweatshirts, fleeces, cardigans and polo shirts
embroidered with our school logo are available from HUCKNALL SPORTS at
2A High Street, Hucknall, Nottingham, NG15 7HD. Alternative contact
details are by telephone (0115 9521122/ 9680062) or by e-mail (sales@hucknallsports.co.uk).
If parents do not wish to purchase these items other items of clothing
in the school colours are fine.
Additional items of school uniform available are:
• grey or black trousers/skirt/pinafore dress
• white or grey shirt or blouse
• green or yellow dresses
School book bags are
available directly from school.
All children should have a change of clothing for PE. This should be
shorts and a t-shirt. They also need a pair of trainers for outdoor
sessions.
Sensible footwear is essential. Children should not wear jewellery at
school for health and safety reasons. If children have pierced ears they
should wear studs and remove their earrings for P.E. activities. If they
cannot remove them they will need to cover them over with plasters.
We also strongly recommend that children's clothing is clearly marked
with their name.

SPECIAL TEACHING
ARRANGEMENTS
At Broomhill we recognise that a number of children will have special
educational needs at some time during their school life. This may be
academic, physical, emotional or social. The class teacher will usually
deal with these needs but, where applicable, appropriate support will be
provided by extra teaching staff or external agencies such as the
Inclusion Support Team or the Educational Psychologist. We have teaching
assistants assigned to each year group who work with individuals and
small groups for a total of 130 hours each week.
Staff are trained to support children with physical special needs and we
have a fully-equipped room to meet their individual requirements. We
also have access to a sensory room at the Children's Centre.
This continual programme of structured support for individual children,
together with the promotion of positive self-esteem through an
atmosphere of care and equality, forms the framework of our approach to
teaching children with special educational needs at Broomhill.
DISABILITY EQUALITY
SCHEME: MISSION STATEMENT
At Broomhill Junior School we are committed to ensuring equality of
education and
opportunity for disabled pupils, staff and all those receiving services
from the school.
We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which people
feel free to disclose their disability and to participate fully in
school life. The achievement of disabled pupils will be monitored and we
will use this data to raise standards and
ensure inclusive teaching. We will make reasonable adjustments to make
sure that the school environment is as accessible as possible. At
Broomhill School we believe that diversity is a strength, which should
be respected and celebrated by all
Newsletters and information
will be provided in accessible formats on request so that parents or
carers who maybe, for example, visually impaired, can access the
information.
Additionally, events for
parents and carers such as open evenings and meetings with teachers are
always held in accessible parts of the building.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS
The school is not affiliated to any religious denomination.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
POLICY
Religious education is taught in accordance with the
Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus. There is a wide variety of assemblies
taken by members of staff. A special Achievement Service is held every
Friday when we welcome parents and friends to join us. The school makes
arrangements for parents to exercise the right to withdraw their
children from religious worship or instruction. Children who are
withdrawn at parental request will be given suitable alternative work.
SEX EDUCATION
Sex education is not taught as a separate subject but during
their time in school children will be taught the process of reproduction
in mammals in accordance with the National Curriculum. Children
naturally ask questions which will be answered in a sensitive manner by
the class teachers concerned. When children reach Year 6 they follow a
health education programme organised by the school nurse and teaching
staff. This programme includes talks and DVDs about relationships and
personal hygiene. Parents are advised of the content of the programme
and are given the opportunity to come in and view the DVDs before they
are shown to the children.
DRUGS EDUCATION
We work in partnership with the Nottinghamshire Police Force to deliver
the DARE programme (Drugs Awareness Resistance Education) to Year 6
pupils. Other year groups cover health related aspects of this subject
as part of our Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum.
