CURRICULUM INFORMATION FOR SPRING TERM 2010

Year 3 and 4

 

This term in Lower school we will be finding out and learning all about Africa.  We will be learning to locate Africa and the United Kingdom on a map.  We will also be finding out all about different geographical features of Africa, including the climate and landscape.

 

Our music will also be linked with Africa and we will be learning to play the Djembe drum and learning different African songs.  We will also be designing and making our own African percussion instrument.

 

In science we will be learning about plants.  We will be learning how to label different parts and understanding how plants grow and reproduce.

 

In Literacy the children in year 4 will be finding out all about newspapers and report writing and will be writing their own newspaper report.

 

The children in year 3 will be studying the author Lauren Child and learning how to write letters.  Later on in the term we will be performing poetry and working with folk tales and mythical stories.

 

 

 

      

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Year 5

 

This term Year 5 will be studying, as our main topic, World War II.  We will be looking at The Road to War, Evacuees, the Blitz and the Home Front. Our Literacy focus will also support this topic.  We will be reading Carrie’s War and completing work in response to the text.  We will also be looking at recounts from World War II focusing on non fiction writing styles.

 

In Science we will be concentrating on Changing and Separating Materials.  In P.E. gymnastics, Tag rugby and hockey, in Art still life skills and in Music exploring rounds. We will also be continuing to study French.

Year 6

 

This term Year 6 will begin studying a cross curricular topic incorporating the Rainforest entitled “Adventure Island”

 

In Literacy we will be focusing on reading related skills, including comprehension.  We will be looking at story writing and focus upon writing good quality beginnings, conclusions, character descriptions as well a wider range of genre like letters, diaries and poems.  Our class story book will be “Journey to the Rover Sea” by Eva Ibbotson

 

In maths we will be covering a range of topics including rounding, decimals, shape and space, fractions, data handling, number and calculator work.  We will continue with tables and mental maths activities

 

Our science focus will support our ‘Adventure Island’ topic.  We will be studying topics including sound, plants and animals.

 

In Art we are looking at sketching and People in Action and we will be studying different religious buildings for our R.E. topic.

 

In Geography we will be looking at ‘What’s in the News?’ locally, nationally and internationally.

 

We will  also be looking at environmental issues.

 

Both classes will need their P.E. kits on Tuesdays and Fridays

 HOW YOU CAN HELP

Find a convenient time that is suitable for the whole family to put aside for work time.

If possible make a space available for your child to work.

bullet

Be sympathetic to your child’s needs.

bullet

Ask before you leap in with help!

Support when needed.

Be aware of what your child needs to complete the given task.

bullet

Be a gentle positive reminder and praise all efforts not just completed tasks.

bullet

Encourage organisational skills.

bullet

Try to make the time spent special in some way.

bullet

Try and build in some kind of reward when homework is complete.

Remind your child to take in work on the appropriate date but work towards independence.

bullet

Try not to push and nag but instead praise and support!

It is important that your child completes all homework tasks and hands them in on the date agreed with their teacher.  All homework activities are designed to consolidate and extend your child, so it is vital that we work together to ensure that all homework tasks are completed on time.
